Officer killed in accident after shift at Rock County jail

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) - A correctional officer died in a car accident that happened on his way home from a shift at the Rock County jail. The county sheriff's office says 44-year-old Dale Bryant, of Evansville, crossed the centerline on Highway 14 between Janesville and Evansville at 3 p.m. Saturday.
He crashed head-on with a semi-tractor pulling a milk trailer. The driver of the truck and his wife were uninjured. Highway 14 was closed for six hours while the Wisconsin State Patrol investigated. The sheriff's office says Bryant was not wearing a seat belt, but the couple was wearing their belts.

something similar happened in goshen a correctional officer died on route 17 Alcohol may have played a role in the Friday morning death of a motorist on Route 17, state police say.

Sgt. Mark Ward, an off-duty Orange County correction officer, died after his car went off the eastbound lanes of Route 17 near Exit 122A. His Infiniti G35 went 300 yards down an embankment before striking a street sign and a tree.

"Preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident indicates improper lane usage and alcohol involvement," state police said in a news release Friday afternoon. The investigation is continuing.

Ward was not wearing a seatbelt, police said. Ward was not carrying any passengers when the accident happened about 3:30 a.m.

Ward had worked at the Orange County Jail since 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2006.

He worked the 3-11 shift at the jail, and he was well-liked and quick witted, said Sgt. Dave Estrada, the president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association.

Ward was "very well-respected and well-liked," said Dominick Orsino, the county's corrections administrator. "He's really going to missed."
